Performing a major kitchen remodel is one of the most satisfying projects for us and our clients. However, costs for a kitchen renovation can easily skyrocket if not planned properly. We encourage as much planning as possible prior to moving forward with any prospective project. Doing so will alleviate many of the frustrations associated with a renovation.
Budget
designers and Architects will often advise to plan on spending approximately 15% of your home's current value towards a kitchen remodel. For example, you might expect to budget approximately $45,000 for a kitchen renovation in a home worth $300,00.
Some clients have opted to increase their budget based on their expectation of living in their home for many years. To get an approximate idea of the value of your home, you might find (www.zillow.com) to be useful.
Time frame
A relatively simple project that merely involves removing existing fixtures, counters, appliances and cabinets and replacing them with updated products generally takes only a few weeks.
A major renovation involving structural changes or moving walls, plumbing, electrical, etc, will require two to three weeks to perform these tasks two to four weeks to order and install the cabinets, and two to three weeks to install all the finished features. In all a major renovation could take 8 to 12 weeks.
We generally advise our clients to move into an apartment during a major renovation due to the necessity of shutting off water, electrical and gas at various points throughout the project.
